Employment
The City of Murfreesboro only accepts applications when positions are listed as available. Applications are accepted in the personnel department located in City Hall. After an application is accepted, it is forwarded to the Murfreesboro Fire Department for review. After applications are reviewed, candidates are selected for interview and/or an ability test.
Applicants for firefighter must have a high school diploma or equivalent, valid driver’s license, must be 21 years of age, and must have legal authorization to work in the United States. A job description of firefighter, including all requirements, is available for viewing; however, applications are generally accepted only for positions advertised.
An assistant fire chief heads the department’s training division. Training coordinators are responsible for the State of Tennessee Firefighting Commission’s 40-hour training and certification program, which includes overseeing external training courses at the Tennessee Fire and Codes Academy (TFACA) and other specialized courses. The medical training coordinator is also responsible for medical training including CPR and first responder certifications.
Instructors who are assigned to each shift provide the in-house training. These instructors teach basic to advanced firefighting skills, including job safety and driving, pumping, and aerial operations.
Firefighters train a minimum of 20 hours per month in order to help maintain the city’s Class 2 Insurance Services Office (ISO) fire rating. Training is received from MFD instructors, Tennessee Fire and Codes Academy (TFACA), University of Tennessee Center for Government Training, Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), Volunteer State Community College, Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the National Fire Academy (NFA).
