Other Services

The MFD responds to residential carbon monoxide (CO) alarms. The department currently has 14 carbon monoxide gas detectors (one on every fire engine and rescue company), which are used to determine the level of CO in the home. The MFD is currently receiving approximately four calls per month to perform carbon monoxide detection.

A hazardous material (HAZMAT) incident involves the actual or potential release of any substance (solid, liquid, or gas) capable of causing harm to people, property, and the environment.

The MFD is currently providing limited response to HAZMAT incidents with 93 trained personnel. Rutherford County also responds to HAZMAT incidents.

MFD's current HAZMAT response is limited to a defensive mode. The department's foremost goals are to act safely, limit potential exposure to all persons, and provide timely information to the proper authorities. Defensive actions include those taken during a hazardous material incident in which there is no intentional contact with the material involved. They involve notification and possible evacuation, but not plugging, patching, or cleanup of spilled or leaking materials. Examples include but are not limited to elimination of ignition sources, vapor suppression, and diverting to keep a release to a confined area.
